Our Staff

NCAP has a dedicated staff to help serve our coaches and swimmers outside of the pool.

Thomas Ugast - CEO and President

Tom Ugast was born and raised in Chevy Chase, MD and went to St. John's College High School and The American University. Tom graduated from AU in 1980 with a BS in Administration of Justice. While at AU, Tom was a member of the varsity swim team and captain in his senior year. He coached the Montgomery Aquatic Club while attending college, which trained at AU.

Once he graduated college, Ugast coached at Curl Burke Swim Club at Georgetown Prep from 1980-1983, while working in the printing business. Tom stopped coaching in the early 80's and focused on a business career and family, while maintaining friendships with the coaches. He was able to take time off of work and help coach on two international travel trips with long-time coach, Kerry Ellett. One to Germany for 3 weeks and one to Scotland for 2 weeks!

After having a career in printing and sending his daughter off to college, Tom rejoined Curl Burke and helped transition the Club to Nation's Capital Swimming in 2012. Since then, he has been Chief Executive Officer and works closely with all of our head site coaches and administrative staff focusing on our mission statement and core values for the Club.

In 2018 Tom was voted on the Board of Directors of USA Swimming for a 2 year term, serving as the Vice Chairman of Fiscal Oversight. The focus of the Board was to help staff in Colorado Springs with the direction of Age Group Swimming for the entire country.  They worked to ensure that the board was doing everything they could as the National Governing Body to win medals at the Olympics every 4 years.

Tom lives in Washington, D.C. and visits his vacation home in Kiawah Island, SC during the slower times in the season to play golf and enjoy the beach!

Karyn McCannon - Director of Operations

Karyn started with NCAP in 2014. She has been the Director of Operations for the past 9 years, and has also taken on our Meet Director, Registrar, Safe Sport Chair and Officials Coordinator roles.

Karyn grew up in Buffalo, New York, first swimming, then working for STAR Swimming as their Meet Director. She graduated from the University of Buffalo with a BS in Business Administration, with a Finance concentration, and completed her Masters of Science in Human Resources and Employment relations at Penn State.

Karyn lives in Frederick, Maryland with her husband Erik, children Eliza and Anna, and a dog and two cats.

Spencer Ugast - Director of Communications & Athletic Services

Spencer joined the club in the Spring of 2017.  Her background is in Human Resources, previously working as a HR Executive Team Leader for Target and then as a Campus Recruiter for BDO, a large public accounting firm.  Spencer grew up in Columbia, MD and graduated from College of Charleston with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications.

Spencer acts as our Director of Communications, overseeing customer service for all of our competitive, developmental and learn to swim families across the club.  She manages Human Resources for our coaching staff working closely with the head coaches, but acting as a resource for all of our coaches and swim instructors.  Spencer lives in Washington D.C. with her husband, Ryan and their dog Goldie, and they are expecting their first child this October 2023.

John Firestein - Accounting

John spent over 30 years in the printing industry in roles such as Controller and VP-Finance & Management Information Systems. His responsibilities included financial reporting as well as the development of accounting and various management information systems to help manage the business.

Since 2010, John has been an independent consultant that designs and develops information systems for medium-sized companies. He’s built systems for healthcare providers, reforestation & carbon offset program management firms, mobile veterinary surgeons and various types of manufacturing companies.

He was exposed to swimming in 1996 when his daughter Emalee decided she wanted to join her local swim team. In order to avoid the boredom of being a spectator at swim meets, he decided to become an official and eventually became a PVS referee. He stepped away from swimming in order to focus on building his consulting business and is happy to be back helping NCAP in any way he can.
