Coaching Staff

Kara McElveen - Bronze 2

Coach Kara began coaching with Nation's Capital Swim Club in 1999. She has also coached in local summer leagues (including the NVSL, CSL, and DCCL) since the late 90s. Most recently, she was the Head Coach for the Great Falls Rapids summer swim team for the 2016-2018 seasons. In addition to coaching, she is an Instructional Coach at Westlawn Elementary in Fairfax County. When not at the pool or school, Coach Kara spends time with her husband and 2 children. Coach Kara will be coaching Bronze 2 this season.

Jeremy Cochran - Gold AM

Coach Jeremy joined NCAP in 2018 as the Head Site Coach at Tysons. He is the Lead Coach with our Gold AM Group and oversees the training of all levels at the Site. During his time with NCAP he has coached Age Group/Sectional/NCSA/Futures/Pro Series/US Open Qualifiers and is always seeking ways to build well rounded athletes both in and out of the pool.

Coach Jeremy is a 2003 Graduate of WVU with a major in Sport Psychology. He has been a Coach at the National Diversity Select Camp. Prior to NCAP, Coach Jeremy spent 7 years as the Head Age Group/Associated Head Coach for the Greenwich Dolphins in Greenwich, CT. During his time in Greenwich he coached multiple Olympic Trials Qualifiers and a National Age Group Record Holder along with Qualifiers at all National Level Meets. He is a Two Time CT Age Group Coach of the Year.

John Flanagan - Gold PM

Coach John has been coaching for more than 50 years at the USS Age Group, Senior, and Masters level. He began coaching in Potomac Valley in 1971 where he has coached Open Water swimmers, College Level swimmers, and Junior/Senior National swimmers. Coach John has been named to several National and Junior National teams and was named the YMCA Coach of the Year in 1990 along with the Swim Swam Coach of the Year (Age Group) in 2013 and NCSA Coach of the Year in 2015. Coach John has been chosen for the Swimming World Championship staff (1986, 1994, 1998), USA Pac Pacific Games staff (1995), NCSA staff - Ireland (2010), NSCA staff - Japan (2012), World Youth staff (2013), and World University Games staff (2015). He has coached over 100 National, Jr. National, NCSA, and National YWCA first place finishes since 1983. Coach John will be coaching the Gold PM group.

Kelly Rose McCullough - Silver 1, Gold Prep, Gold AM Assistant

Coach Kelly Rose joined the staff of NCAP Tysons in September of 2017 and is beginning her 7th season with the team. She is the lead coach of the Silver 1 and Gold Prep groups, while also assisting with Gold AM.

Kelly Rose graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 2011 with a degree in Business Administration—Management and a minor in Accounting. While attending UNI, she was named team captain her Senior year and specialized in distance freestyle, butterfly, and backstroke during her 4 years of competition. Upon graduation from college, she went to work for the Snowfox Swim Team in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. During her 4 years with Snowfox, she became the Head Age Group Coach and was the Administrative Assistant to the Board of Directors. 

Kelly also served as the Head All-Stars Coach (2013 and 2015) and the Head Zones Coach (2012-2014) for Team South Dakota. Kelly Rose began coaching with The Fish during the summer of 2015. She served as the Head Coach of the Mini Fish, assisted with the other age groups, and performed many of the administrative responsibilities.

Coach Kelly Rose was named as one of the Top 50 Age Group Coaches in the nation for the 2022-2023 season awarded by the American Swimming Coaches Association and Fitter and Faster.  During the past several summers, Kelly Rose has enjoyed coaching in the NVSL with Langley, Highlands, and Hunter Mill. She continues to love chasing the black line as much as possible and has participated in the 4.4 mile Chesapeake Bay Swim three times.

Sydney Bright - Bronze 1, Silver 2

Coach Sydney is entering her 8th season coaching and 4th season with NCAP . She is a proud Eagle both from Bridgewater College and American University with degrees in Political Science, French, Public Administration and Policy. She grew up in Port-au-Prince, Haiti where she spent her childhood swimming and continued to swim with YMCA Alexandria Sea Dragons then at Bridgewater College. 

Sydney enjoys the process of swimming and is eager to share that joy with others as they work together to reach their goals. Sydney coaches our Bronze 1 and Silver 2 groups. In her free time, Sydney considers herself to be a globetrotter, she dreams of one day visiting all 7 continents.

Sebastian Chang - Bronze 1 Assistant

Sebastian Chang started coaching with NCAP in March of 2023. He swam for 13 years, swimming for RMSC and finishing off his career at UMBC where he swam to represent the school. During those 13 years he coached for the summer team in his area and for the clinics that his college team offered. He is excited to continue working with the Bronze 1 group.

Jessica Cruzado - Bronze 2 Assistant

Coach Jessica has been coaching with NCAP for 5 years. She grew up in the area, swimming for NVSL and PVS through high school, graduating from William & Mary in 2019 with a B.S. in Chemistry and Computer Science. Coach Jessica coaches Bronze 2 and assists with Gold Prep and is also the Swim School and Developmental Director for NCAP Marymount. She's also an Assistant Coach for The Potomac School's Varsity swim team and the Head Coach for the Herndon Hammerheads during the summer. 

Diego Cruzado - Gold AM Assistant

Diego Cruzado Began coaching with NCAP in July of 2023, working with Jeremy’s Gold AM group. He recently graduated from the College of William and Mary majoring in both Finance and Economics, where he was selected as a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma International Business Honor Society. During his time in college, Diego swam for the Tribe at the NCAA level, swimming the 50, 100, and 200 free. 

Diego grew up swimming locally in NVSL for Highlands starting at the age of 6, and year round in PVS since 8. He also coached for his summer league team when he was in High School. Diego is a dual citizen with Peru, and speaks fluent Spanish. In the Fall, Diego will begin working for PNC Bank as an Institutional Asset Management analyst. Having recently finished his competitive swimming, he is eager to share his fresh experiences and knowledge of the sport with others as he begins his coaching career with NCAP. In his free time, Diego enjoys doing CrossFit, and has been a long-time fan of both soccer and Formula 1.
