A tryout for new swimmers is required prior to registration. 

Athletes should come prepared to get in the water and be evaluated by the coaching staff.

There is no need to sign up for a tryout in advance.

Developmental Stroke School

Our Stroke School is devoted to competitive stroke instruction with an emphasis on balance in the water through specialized drills.

Coaching Staff

Marilyn Mangels

Head Coach 

Marilyn Mangels has more than 40 years of experience coaching USS beginner to elite Age Group swimmers. She has produced many Zone, Sectional and Junior national swimmers and has been named PVS Coach of the year. Marilyn coaches our AG 1, AG 1 Select and Senior Prep a.m. and p.m. groups, and is the Site Coordinator of the Tyson’s YWCA facility.

John Flanagan

John Flanagan has been coaching for more than 43 years at the USS Age Group, Senior, and Masters levels.  In addition he has coached Open Water and Collegiate level swimmers. He has been a National Team coach for the past 3 years and a National Junior Team coach for the past 6 years. He was named Swim Swam Coach of the Year (Age Group) in 2013. John was chosen for the Swimming World Championship Staff (1986,1994,1998), World Youth Staff (2013), World University Games Staff (2015). John coaches our Elite Senior Group at the Tysons YWCA, where he has produced many Olympic Trials and Junior Nationals Champion swimmers.

Amy Duellman

Amy Duellman is in her 21st season as a USS Age Group Coach and has developed many swimmers and teams in local summer and high school leagues for the past 28 years. Amy graduated from Virginia Tech in 1996 with a degree in Education and received the Outstanding Student Teacher Award. In 2000 she was recognized as Washington Post’s All Met High School Coach of the Year. She has experience coaching all levels of our Age Group program and has been a new coach mentor for Tysons and Claude Moore sites since 2001. Amy works with AG 1 AM Select and Senior Prep groups at Tysons and coordinates meet entries for the site. She coaches AG 2 PM at Claude Moore. 

Ashley Fouse

Age Group Coach

Ashley Fouse begins her second season with NCAP. Ashley graduated in the spring with a degree in Sports Management and coaching.  She has had 6 years of experience coaching in the NVSL summer league program and also works with triathletes and master swimmers. Ashley will coach HSP, AG 2B (MWF), AG 4 and will work in our Saturday Stroke School.

Jay Wareham

Age Group Coach

Jay Wareham begins his first year with NCAP. He has 7 years of coaching experience working with Reston and Loudoun County summer leagues. Most recently he volunteered as an Assistant Coach for Loudoun County High School Swim Team. He is a Graduate of Penn State Altoona where he swam and was a team captain. He was named Male Scholar Athlete of the Year as a junior and senior. Jay will coach AG 2A (TThF), assist Coach John with Senior Group, and help in our Saturday Stroke School.

Kara McElveen

Age Group Coach

Kara McElveen is in her 18th season and has been coaching in local summer leagues for several years. She is the Head Coach for Great Falls summer swim team. In addition to coaching, she is a special education teacher at Dogwood Elementary in Fairfax County. Kara coaches AG 3.
